Through a very humanistic perspective, discover their story, unique lifestyle, and challenges.

1- Tell us about yourself

I am a graphic designer and founder of Hoola Studio.

2- Where does your immense passion for your profession come from?

For as long as I can remember, I always have liked to create. It was then clear to me that I would live from this. When I was 14, I discovered a new profession: graphic designer. It was perfect for me, I would create and earn money at the same time! I went to college in graphism at the Cégep de Sainte-Foy in 1995 and finished in 1998. I am a graphic designer since then and I still love it! Yes, already 21 years! Ouch!

3- How did you become self-employed?

In 2010, I was dreaming of becoming self-employed. Then, the business I was working for merged with another one where I did not want to be. After 13 years of work in an agency, on the morning of a January 3rd, I was exhausted. I could not even walk.

It is at this moment that I had to take a break. My doctor was very clear on the fact that I needed some time to rest. It is at this moment that the diagnosis felt: generalized anxiety. I was living with it for so long and we FINALLY found what was wrong. 4 months and a half later, I had an opportunity to work as a freelancer 3 days per week at a pharmaceutical business. I then understood that it was the right moment. I took the great leap!

4- What is the most difficult part of self-employment?

Being paid! It is the main inconvenience of being self-employed. But since I use Momenteo, it is way easier to make follow-ups. It is simpler and more efficient!

5- Which part of being self-employed do you like the most?

The freedom! It is only my customers and I. No boss! No fixed schedule! I must admit that I like this a lot!

6- Tell us about your work routine

I love animals and my work routine starts with them. I let my pugs Emmett and Georges out and feed my beautiful cat Minie. Then my dogs eat. I prepare my coffee and then up to work!

I start by reading my emails, I look at my daily schedule on Asana and I update it. Then, I create. These days, I work on a lot of packing projects with my customers. I love it!

I try to finish working at 6 p.m. maximum to have a healthy lifestyle. It also helps me to manage my anxiety. Since I work from home, I’m feeling a lot better.

7- What are the online tools you could not live without

For design: Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign)

For web: Wordpress and DIVI builder

For management: Asana and Google tools (Calendar, Drive, etc.)

For accounting: Momenteo, of course!

8. How did you learn about Momenteo and how long have you been using it?

I discovered Momenteo 2 years after my start as a self-employed worker. I use it since then. I had enough of my Excel files and the invoices I did myself. When I noticed that it was a product from Quebec, I was convinced right away! To be honest, however, I do not remember how I discover this app.

9- What makes Momenteo different from other accounting programs?

It is made here, by people from here, for self-employed workers from here! It is the main difference, in my opinion.

10- How do you find your new customers?

I work on my networking! It is always the best way to find new projects. I must admit, however, that my blog and my professional Facebook page bring me a lot of requests too.

11. What are your tips for someone who would like to get into freelance?

The first thing to do is to build a list of questions, find a good accountant (not an aunt that makes tax reports once in a while) and ask him all your questions. An accountant is expensive but it will help you save a lot of time and money. I promise!

12. Which project are you most proud of?

Café La Maison Smith’s branding! But also the packaging of the Lökkö dressing now available at Simons!

13. Do you have any big plans for this fall/end of the year?

Yes! Three websites, a magazine, a 20-page guide, packaging for 4 different customers, website updates, a flyer, a poster, and follow-ups. All this including an update of my website. There will be more, as always.

14. How Can We Contact You?

On my website, of course: or by email at . Feel free to contact me!
