Discover their story and unique way of life through a very human perspective. We meet with Laura Goulet, a social media strategist and copywriter, this month.

1-Tell us about yourself

I am a social media and copywriting strategist. I have helped businesses position themselves online since 2019, the year I launched my company.

2-Where does your interest in social media come from?

Since social media appeared in our lives, I have always been interested in them, whether it is for the business I worked for, but also (and mostly) for my musical projects. I always sought new ideas and ways to stand out and create a bridge between my music and the ears that need it.

I then became the social media reference for people in my entourage.

3-How did you become self-employed?

I had been dreaming of starting my own business for years when I finally decided to leap in 2019, after a work stoppage of several months. I did not see myself returning to work and putting aside my ideas and projects again.

4-What is the most challenging part of self-employment?

It is difficult to say since I like what I do!

Seriously, I had the privilege of not lacking jobs since I started. I refuse more contracts than I accept. That said, it is difficult for many right now not to have a stable income, and I consider myself very lucky.

A more challenging aspect for me would be the distractions when my husband and children are at home. My concentration is way better when I am alone with my plants. They do not talk much!

5-Which part of being self-employed do you like the most?

The flexibility and the possibility of doing something else when I do not feel creative, especially when I do not have any energy on Friday afternoons!

As an employee, when I felt tired or stuck on an idea, it was impossible to leave my desk to take a walk. My brain needs pauses and to unwind from time to time to remain creative. As an employee, this was not working for me.

Also, I appreciate the flexibility of being at home for the kids after school and available for my family if needed.

I think that the most important benefit is, without any doubt, to choose with whom I work. I select people with whom I share values, vision, and humor. I am not wrong often.

6-Tell us about your work routine.

We often believe that freelancers do not have any work routine, but this is not my case. I drive my kids to school and work until I get them back. I have flexible hours, but I do not have the chance to work when I want necessarily.

7-What are the online tools you could not live without?

It is funny because when I started my business, I had one condition: I absolutely did not want to manage my accounting on an Excel spreadsheet.

Numbers always gave me a lot of anxiety; having a tool to manage them was more than necessary for me.

I took the time to shop, and Momenteo is the tool I chose after analyzing all options for a time. It was THE first investment I made for my business, and I NEVER regretted it.

Furthermore, I am a fan of Asana for communications with my clients, ThriveCart for hosting my training courses and shopping baskets, and Metricool for scheduling my content. I also use Canva every day.

8-How did you learn about Momenteo, and how long have you been using it?

I asked a question in a freelancer group to find the perfect accounting tool, and Momenteo was mentioned many times. Several people like it, I believe!

9-What makes Momenteo different from other accounting tools?

Since it is a Canadian company, it understands the needs of freelancers and businesses from here. It is a significant advantage.

10-How did you find your first customers?

By being active on social media and online networking. Some word of mouth, too.

11-What are your tips for someone who would like to get into freelance?

I would say to remove all friction points, like I did with my accounting, by choosing a tool right at the beginning. It is wonderful to delegate some tasks or be assisted to focus on your genius zone if possible. Sometimes, delegating tasks costs less than doing them yourself, especially when you do not master them.

12-What are your tips for someone who would work with a social media strategist?

Make sure to find something with whom you connect, someone who asks many questions and wants to know your business like the back of their hand. A social media and communication strategy is not limited to choosing the relevant platforms, content categories, and frequency of publication. It is so much more than that!

Knowing the features of these platforms is not sufficient to perform well. You need to know how to talk to the humans behind the screen and know them well.

If you want to delegate the management of your social media, choose someone who offers a strategy that is adapted to your needs, business goals, and reality.

13-Why are you proud of being a freelancer?

I have the impression of having a real influence on people, their businesses, and ultimately their lives. I concretely see the effects of what I do and the benefits I bring, which was less the case when I was an employee.

What I achieve to do with my business also gives me a lot of pride. I live great things every day, and my family and even my clients can benefit from this.

Also, I must say that I have a thought for my grandfather, who was an entrepreneur too. Okay, he had a big business with dozens of employees. It is not exactly the same, but I believe I have inherited some of his entrepreneurial spirit (at least, I hope!). He died young, and I did not have the chance to know him very much. I do think about him daily.

14-Do you have any big plans for 2024?

I just had my first webinar and will likely create a new one in 2024. I will probably prepare a new launch for my training course.

I also continue to work on the online visibility and notoriety of small and big businesses.

15-How can we contact you?

I invite everyone to subscribe to my newsletter because it is the funniest of all!

Here is my website: https://lauragoulet.com/

I am also very active on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/lauragoulet_reseauxsociaux/
