Through a very humanistic perspective, discover their story, unique lifestyle, and challenges. Today, we meet Laurence, who is an immigration consultant.

1- Tell us About Yourself

My name is Laurence Langlois, and I am an approved Canadian immigration consultant. I am authorized to provide guidance regarding immigration and represent clients. I help them through their immigration process to Canada.

2- Where Does Your Interest in Immigration Come From?

I always had an interest in other cultures. I traveled a lot, and I had many notable encounters that eased my adaptability and integration to a new country. Adapting to a new country starts even before arriving. Also, I currently have nearly 20 student recruitment missions as part of my duties for a university. I quickly understood that moving to another country is an uncommon goal that requires a lot of courage. My work allows me to find a human touch, which is important to me, but also to navigate among the different Canadian laws and regulations.

3- How Did You Become Self-Employed?

I started my business part-time when I obtained my immigration consultant title.

4- What Is the Most Challenging Part of Self-Employment?

Numbers! Accounting! I studied communications. I find bookkeeping challenging.

5- Which Part of Being Self-Employed Do You Like the Most?

I can make my own schedule and work from home. I enjoy being the one making the decisions!

6- Tell Us About Your Work Routine.

I use work blocs for different tasks. Some blocs are fixed over time and some are more flexible according to my needs. For example, my main tasks are email management, customer files management, sending quotes, bookkeeping, making appointments, case follow-up, etc.

7- What Are the Online Tools You Could Not Live Without?

1- Calendly: to make appointments with my clients.

2- Trello: to have a homemade CRM and ease my follow-ups with my clients.

3- Momenteo: to manage my quotes and invoices.

4- Google Form: to create forms and collect data.

5- Adobe Sign: to let my clients sign my professional contract of services

8. How Did You Learn About Momenteo, and How Long Have You Been Using It?

It is my husband that told me about Momenteo. He suggested it after analyzing a lot of different invoicing software. He also has a business.

9- What Makes Momenteo Different from Other Accounting Programs?

Without a doubt, it’s its friendliness and ease of use.

10- How Did You Find Your First Customers?

I own a Facebook group where I publish content (live, posts, videos) for my target audience. It is then mostly by social media and word of mouth.

11. What Are Your Tips for Someone Who Would Like to Get Into Freelance?

To have a solid plan and a clear vision of your mission. Know your target audience and understand where to find them. It is essential.

12. What Would You Say to Someone Who Would Like to Use the Services of an Immigration Consultant?

It is very important to check if the person is authorized to represent immigrants or give them advice. We have to be very vigilant; fraud is present regarding immigration. Official consultants can be:

Citizenship and immigration consultants members of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council.

Lawyers or notaries members of a provincial bar of Canada ou the Chambre des notaires du Québec.

Parajurists (Ontario only) members of the Law Society of Ontario.

For my part, I am a member of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (R705923).

13. What Are You Most Proud of About Being a Self-Employed Worker?

Without a doubt, the fact to have created my business and customize it to reflect my values. Moreover, I am proud of making my own decisions and live with the benefits and consequences. Whatever the final result, we learn, and above all, we have more experience.

14.
